Chevalier Surprise is a band whose punk energy transcends (dis)ability. This quartet Verviers quartet performs boogie punk rock with unionist messages and an intensity that is truly unique. Their explosive cocktail of guitars and raw poetry is reminiscent of the Cramps, B52, and Pierre Rapsat.
“Quand je vais à la boulagnerie, à la poissonnerie et que les gens me regardent de travers, j’ai envie de leur dire : Vous avez un problème ? Vous voulez mon poing dans votre gueule ?”
(At the bakery, or the fishmongers, people look at me sideways. I want to say to them: What’s your problem? You want my fist in your face?).
The brainchild of Rémi Rotsaert (Zone-Art asbl), the group came to life in December 2017 from a collaboration between the association’s artists, their facilitator/musician Rémi Rotsaert, and musician Jérémy Alonzi. Rotsaert changed direction due to the coronavirus in 2020, which made way for David D’inverno on drums.
DJ Hyppocampo is an excellent bar DJ always looking to create a conga line with her audience. Thanks to her experience as a media librarian, she has had access to an abyssal collection of forgotten and/or non-digitized music projects with which she enjoys composing her mixes. She is also a member of the Brussels-based collective Poxcat, which aims to make female-identifying DJs, producers, and musicians visible and to promote them through the organization of festive events, the broadcasting of radio shows, and podcasts.
What’s a Belle Flaque?
Liquid left behind on the dancefloor,
our bodies glistening, beading, our asses curling. The ‘guerrillas’ of the dancefloor guide my selection. We’re hungry.
Anger and love, regardless of gender, but more feminine.
What flows from our eyes when we think of our love. Our joys, our rages, left on the dancefloor, we travel the thorny and undulating path of our densest and most fragile emotions.
Belle flaque builds her sets as a tribute to dancing bodies, to ‘hearts without verandas’, to anger, to voices and insatiable hunger.
At the moment, she’s playing a selection of dance hall, rap, shatta and trap, with no limits on style. As long as our bodies are shaking.
A tenderly thorny slap, it’s disturbing enough to make you dance and powerful enough to make you smile.
